Blood Test for Fibromyalgia available?

A blood test for Fibromyalgia is offered as a service by a company called EpicGenetics, Inc. in the USA.

It is important to note that this has only just been passed onto me and I need to start doing some checks to verify the claims.

The test Fibromyalgia test the company offers is called “FM/a®” and they claim it is the first test available that can diagnose Fibromyalgia. The results are available in a week or less from their laboratory, so they claim, and a simple blood test is all that is required. The company offer the test for $744 USD and also state this could be fully or partially covered by some medical insurance providers to people within the USA. It is unclear at this point in time if this service can be offered globally but I hope to bring you this news along with some background and clinical opinions by UK specialists

The company state that fibromyalgia is a real medical condition and that the test is a multi-biomarker-based test which concerns immune system white blood chemokine and cytokine patterns. They say that Patients with Fibromyalgia have a significantly dysregulated pattern when it comes to these proteins.

Test results are based upon a 1-100 scoring system, with fibromyalgia patients having scores of 50 and above. They claim their test is more than 93% “sensitive” and state this sensitivity is comparable to the blood test for HIV. They also claim that the blood test for rheumatoid arthritis is only 65% “sensitive” for comparison purposes.

This news could be very important to those with Fibromyalgia, their family, their friends and indeed the medical profession. Anyone that has been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia for some time will be able to tell you that it is often not taken seriously by doctors and some dismiss the condition to be psychological and even that it is just a new condition for the hypochondriac to claim they have. However this has been disputed by nearly everyone diagnosed with the condition and there are even examples of doctors with Fibromyalgia and quite a few of them are published on the matter. Whatever this test proves to be I hope to bring you news and opinion as the story develops. With that in mind please email us at development @myfibromyalgia.co.uk if you have any information or would like to contribute to this story, just take the space out before the @ sign as it helps keep spam to a minimum.

Fibro and WCA News

I thought I would group my next two posts into one as I’ve already blogged twice today!

Fibromyalgia News

Firstly some rather bizarre news on Fibromyalgia from the Daily Fail (Daily Mail) about a GP who diagnosed herself with Fibromyalgia and then managed to cure herself by not eating Fruit & Veg. A rather extreme case of “five a day keeps the doctor away” (from work)!!! Obviously there is more to it and one thing I take from the story is the importance of keeping a food diary to see if certain foods, groups or properties may be aggravating or causing certain problems. You can read the full story here.

Work Capability Assessment under Review

Dr Harrington who is behind the controversial Work Capability Assessment that claimants of Employment & Support Allowance must go through is reviewing how his latest recommendations are been implemented. During this process he is asking for people to write to him about there experiences, particularly if you have had more than one assessment. I think it is vital for people with Fibromyalgia to submit their experiences as its not often we get this much of a chance to get our views and experiences under the nose of someone at this level. He will of course receive information from people with any other condition who have undergone the WCA and it’s not just about those with Fibromyalgia. The assessment is literally the practical implementation of the law and the Employment & Support Allowance regulations and the descriptors are part of schedule one and two of the latest update. If you feel like I do that the WCA is fundamentally flawed perhaps it’s worth making our feelings known. Although saying that we are not alone especially after Citizens Advice produced there damning report entitled “It’s not working” which I support. For me neither schedule encompasses the reasons why an individual may not be able to work, and not be able to take part in work related activity. Local conference of the British Medical Association votes against ATOS & the WCA

The United Kingdom Local Medical Committees Conference of the British Medical Association voted yesterday (Tuesday 22nd May 2012) to carry the following motion:

That conference, in respect of work capability assessments (WCA) as performed by ATOS Healthcare, believes that the:

(i) inadequate computer based assessments that are used have little regard to the nature or complexity of the needs of long term sick and disabled persons

(ii) WCA should end with immediate effect and be replaced with a rigorous and safe system that does not cause avoidable harm to some of the weakest and most vulnerable in society.

Changes to contribution based ESA

Some of the letters have already been sent…. The changes have put a cap on claiming Contribution Based Employment & Support Allowance if your in the Work Related Activity Group and state you can only get it for 365 days. Those who are entitled to Income Based ESA or those in the Support Group should not be effected and those entitled to income based ESA should be automatically moved to it.

As you can imagine there is a lot more information on the subject here so I would suggest that anyone getting Contribution Based ESA and are in the Work Related Activity Group should visit this site and read about the changes and how it effects them.
